Fold the cover outward.

Mounting

Follow the installation instructions of the roof rack.
Be sure that adequate clearance is maintained for tilting and opening the glass sunroof.

Loading

Because roof-mounted luggage racks raise the vehicle’s center of gravity when loaded, they have a major effect on vehicle handling and steering response.

Therefore, note the following when loading and driving:

  1. Do not exceed the approved roof/axle weights and the approved gross vehicle weight.
  2. Be sure that adequate clearance is maintained for tilting and opening the glass sun‐roof.
  3. Distribute the roof load uniformly.
  4. The roof load should not extend past the loading area.
  5. Always place the heaviest pieces on the bot‐tom.
  6. Secure the roof luggage firmly, for instance using ratchet straps.
  7. Do not let objects project into the opening path of the trunk lid.
  8. Drive cautiously and avoid sudden acceleration and braking maneuvers. Take corners gently.

Driving on racetracks

Warning
The vehicle is not designed for use in M Sport or motorsport type competition. There is a risk of an accident. Do not use the vehicle for M Sport or motor sport type competitions. Higher mechanical and thermal loads during racetrack operation lead to increased wear. Use of the vehicle in M Sport or motorsport type competition is an improper use of the vehicle and may affect your warranty coverage. Please consult the “New Vehicle Limited Warranty” Booklet for further information on warranty matters. Have vehicle checked by a dealer’s service center or another qualified service center or repair shop before and after driving on a racetrack.

Saving fuel

Vehicle features and options
This chapter describes all standard, country-specific, and optional features offered with the series. It also describes features and functions that are not necessarily available in your vehicle, e.g., due to the selected options or country versions. This also applies to safety-related functions and systems. When using these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations must be observed.

Reducing fuel consumption

General information

The vehicle contains advanced technologies for the reduction of consumption and emission values.
The fuel consumption depends on various factors, such as driving style, road conditions, main‐tenance or environmental factors.
Carrying out certain measures, such as a moderate driving style and regular maintenance, can in‐fluence fuel consumption and the environmental impact.

Remove unnecessary cargo

Additional weight increases fuel consumption. Remove attached parts following use Remove roof-mounted which are no longer required following use. Attached parts on the vehicle impair the aerodynamics and increase the fuel consumption.

Close the windows and glass sunroof

Driving with the glass sunroof and windows open results in increased drag and raises fuel con‐sumption.

Tires

General information
Tires can affect consumption in various ways, for instance tire size may influence consumption.

Check the tire pressure regularly

Check and, if needed, correct the tire inflation pressure at least twice a month and before starting on a long trip.
Low tire inflation pressure increases rolling resistance and thus raises fuel consumption and tire wear.
Observe the correct tire inflation pressure as well as the ECO tire inflation pressure, where applicable.

Tire pressure specifications, refer to page 316. Drive away without delay Do not wait for the engine to warm-up while the vehicle remains stationary. Start driving right away, but at moderate RPM.
This is the fastest way of warming the cold engine up to operating temperature.

Proactive driving

Driving smoothly and proactively reduces fuel consumption. Avoid unnecessary acceleration and braking. By maintaining a suitable distance to the vehicle driving ahead of you.

Avoid high RPM

Driving at low engine speeds lowers fuel con‐sumption and reduces wear.
If necessary, observe the vehicle’s gear shift indi‐cator.

Using coasting overrun mode

When approaching a red light, take your foot off the accelerator and let the vehicle coast to a halt.
For going downhill take your foot off the acceler‐ator and let the vehicle roll.
The fuel supply is interrupted in coasting overrun mode.
Switch off the engine during longer stops

Switching off the engine

Switch off the engine during longer stops, for in‐stance at traffic lights, railroad crossings or in traffic jam.

Auto Start Stop function

The Auto Start/Stop function of the vehicle automatically switches off the engine during a stop. If the engine is switched off and then restarted rather than leaving the engine running constantly, fuel consumption and emissions are reduced. Savings can begin within a few seconds of switching off the engine. Switch off any functions that are not currently needed Functions such as seat heating and the rear window defroster require a lot of energy and in‐crease fuel consumption, especially in city and stop-and-go traffic. Switch off these functions if they are not needed. The ECO PRO driving mode supports the energy conserving use of comfort features. These functions are automatically deactivated partially or completely. Have maintenance carried out Have the vehicle maintained regularly to achieve optimal vehicle efficiency and service life. BMW recommends that maintenance work be performed by a BMW service center. Also refer to BMW Maintenance System.
