Mercedes-Benz AMG GLS 2022 User Manual Restraint System
The Mercedes-Benz AMG GLS is a high-performance luxury SUV offered by the German automaker. While my knowledge cutoff is in September 2021, I can provide you with some information about the AMG GLS up until that point.
The Mercedes-Benz GLS is the largest SUV in the brand’s lineup, and the AMG version adds even more power and sportiness to the equation. The GLS is known for its spacious interior, cutting-edge technology, and impressive performance capabilities.
As of my knowledge cutoff, the most recent model available is the 2021 AMG GLS 63. It features a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, producing around 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. The power is sent to all four wheels through an advanced all-wheel-drive system. The GLS 63 comes with various performance-enhancing features, such as AMG-tuned suspension, larger brakes, and an aggressive exterior design with unique AMG styling cues.
It’s important to note that there may have been updates or changes to the AMG GLS model for the 2022 and later model years, which I wouldn’t be aware of. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, I recommend visiting the official Mercedes-Benz website or contacting a local Mercedes-Benz dealership. They will be able to provide you with the latest details on the 2022 AMG GLS and any new features or improvements it may offer.
The protection provided by the restraint system
The restraint system includes the following components:
- Seat belt system
- Airbags
- Child restraint system
- Child seat anchors
The restraint system can help prevent the vehicle occupants from coming into contact with parts of the vehicle interior in the event of an accident. In the event of an accident, the restraint system can also reduce the forces to which the vehicle occupants are subjected.
A seat belt can only provide the best level of protection if it is worn correctly. Depending on the detected accident situation, Emergency Tensioning Devices and/or airbags supplement the protection offered by a correctly worn seat belt. Emergency Tensioning Devices and/or airbags are not deployed in every accident. In order for the restraint system to provide the intended level of protection, each vehicle occupant must observe the following information:
- Fasten seat belts correctly.
- Sit in an almost upright seat position with their back against the seat backrest.
- Sit with their feet resting on the floor, if possible.
- Always secure persons under 5 t (1.50 m) tall
in an additional restraint system suitable for Mercedes-Benz vehicles. However, no system available today can completely eliminate injuries and fatalities in every accident situation. In particular, the seat belt and airbag generally do not protect against objects penetrating the vehicle from the outside. It is also not possible to completely rule out the risk of injury caused by the airbag deploying.
Limitations of the protection provided by the restraint system
WARNING Risk of injury or death due to modifications to the restraint system Vehicle occupants may no longer be protected as intended if alterations are made to the restraint system.
- Never alter the parts of the restraint system.
- Never tamper with the wiring or any electronic component parts or their software.
If it is necessary to modify the vehicle to accommodate a person with disabilities, contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center for details.
USA only: for details, contact our Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-FOR-MERCedes (1‑800‑367‑6372).
Restraint system functionality
When the vehicle is switched on, a self-test is performed, during which the 6-restraint system warning lamp lights up. It goes out no later than a few seconds after the vehicle is started. The components of the restraint system are then functional.
Malfunctioning restraint system
A malfunction has occurred in the restraint system if:
- the 6-restraint system warning lamp does not light up when the vehicle is switched on
- the 6-restraint system warning lamp lights up continuously or repeatedly during a journey
WARNING Risk of injury due to malfunctions in the restraint system
Components in the restraint system may be activated unintentionally or not deploy as planned in an accident.
- Have the restraint system checked and repaired immediately at a qualified specialist workshop.
The function of the restraint system in an accident
How the restraint system works depends on the severity of the impact detected and the apparent type of accident:
- Frontal impact
- Rear impact
- Side impact
- Rollover
The activation thresholds for the components of the restraint system are determined based on the evaluation of the sensor values measured at various points in the vehicle. This process is preemptive in nature. The triggering/deployment of the components of the restraint system must take place in good time at the start of the collision. Factors that can be seen and measured only after a collision has occurred cannot play a decisive role in airbag deployment, nor do they provide an indication of airbag deployment.
The vehicle may be deformed significantly without an airbag being deployed. This is the case if only parts that are relatively easily deformed are affected and the rate of vehicle deceleration is not high. Conversely, an airbag may be deployed even though the vehicle suffers only minor deformation. If very rigid vehicle parts such as longitudinal members are hit, this may result in sufficiently high levels of vehicle deceleration. Depending on the detected deployment situation, the components of the restraint system can be activated or deployed independently of each other.
- Emergency Tensioning Device: frontal impact, rear impact, side impact, rollover
- Driver’s airbag, front passenger airbag: frontal impact
- Knee airbag: frontal impact
- Side airbag: side impact
- Window airbag: side impact, rollover, frontal impact
- PRE-SAFE® Impulse Side: side impact
The front passenger airbag can be deployed in an accident only if the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp is off. If the front passenger seat is occupied, make sure, both before and during the journey, that the status of the front passenger airbag is correct (/ page 47).
WARNING Risk of burns from hot air bag components
The air bag parts are hot after an airbag has been deployed.
- Do not touch the airbag parts.
- Have a deployed airbag replaced at a qualified specialist workshop as soon as possible.
Mercedes Benz recommends that you have the vehicle towed to a qualified specialist workshop after an accident. Take this into account, particularly if an Emergency Tensioning Device is triggered or an airbag is deployed. If the Emergency Tensioning Devices are triggered or an airbag is deployed, you will hear a bang, and a small amount of powder may also be released:
- The bang will not generally affect your hearing.
- In general, the powder released is not hazardous to health but may cause short-term breathing difficulties to persons suffering from asthma or other pulmonary conditions.
Provided it is safe to do so, leave the vehicle immediately or open the window in order to prevent breathing difficulties. Air bags and pyrotechnic Emergency Tensioning Devices contain perchlorate material, which may require special handling or environmental protection measures. National guidelines regarding waste disposal must be observed. In California, see https://dtsc.ca.gov/. Using the search function, you will find information on perchlorate, for example.
Seat belts
The protection provided by the seat belt
Always fasten your seat belt correctly before starting a journey. A seat belt can provide the best level of protection only if it is worn correctly.
WARNING Risk of injury or death due to incorrectly fastened seat belt
If the seat belt is not worn correctly, it cannot perform its intended protective function. In addition, an incorrectly fastened seat belt can also cause injuries, for example, in the event of an accident or when braking or changing direction suddenly.
- Always ensure that all vehicle occupants have their seat belts fastened correctly and are sitting properly.
- Always observe the instructions about the correct driver’s seat position and adjusting the seat (/ page 91).
