The P2540 code means the engine's computer (PCM) is receiving a signal from the fuel pressure sensor that is outside of the expected "normal" operating range.
Common Causes

Faulty Fuel Pressure Sensor: The sensor has failed internally and is sending inaccurate data to the computer.

Electrical Issues: Corrosion, loose pins, or frayed wiring in the connector leading to the fuel pressure sensor.

Fuel System Problem: Actual low or high fuel pressure caused by a failing fuel pump or a faulty fuel pressure regulator.

Vacuum Leak: A damaged vacuum reference line (if equipped) causing incorrect pressure readings.

Ground/Short Circuit: A short or open circuit in the sensor's wiring harness.
Simple Fixes

Inspect Connector: Check the fuel pressure sensor plug for moisture, corrosion, or loose wires.

Verify Actual Pressure: Use a manual fuel pressure gauge to confirm if the actual fuel pressure matches what the sensor is reporting.

Check Wiring: Inspect the harness for any signs of heat damage or cuts between the sensor and the PCM.

Replace Sensor: If wiring and fuel pressure are verified as healthy, replace the faulty fuel pressure sensor.

Clear Code: Use an OBD-II scanner to reset the ECU and test the system.
Note: Before replacing the sensor, always verify that the fuel pump is delivering the correct pressure, as a dying pump can sometimes trigger this performance code.
