Diagnostic trouble code P0641 indicates a Sensor Reference Voltage "A" Circuit / Open, meaning the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has detected an open circuit, short to ground, or abnormal voltage drop on the primary 5-volt reference "A" supply circuit responsible for powering critical engine sensors.
Common Causes: A shorted sensor on the 5-volt reference "A" circuit (such as a throttle body, accelerator pedal position, or manifold absolute pressure sensor), damaged or chafed wiring harnesses, corroded connector pins, or an internal failure within the PCM.
Diagnostic Steps: Disconnect individual sensors powered by the 5-volt reference "A" circuit one at a time while monitoring voltage with a digital multimeter to see if the reference voltage returns to normal, inspect the wiring harness for rubbing or melting against engine parts, and check for shorts to ground.
Repair Solutions:
1. Replace Shorted Sensor: Install a new sensor if its internal electrical components have failed and are dragging down the 5-volt reference line.
2. Repair Damaged Wiring Harness: Fix or replace frayed wires, broken insulation, or corroded pins within the sensor supply circuit.
3. Clean and Secure Connectors: Clean corrosion from sensor terminals and ensure connector pins lock securely to eliminate intermittent open circuits.
