Maintaining the first-generation GMC Canyon requires using GM-approved engine oil formulations, regular chassis greasing, and strict drivetrain fluid service intervals to protect the Atlas inline engine valve train, 4L60-E automatic transmission, and Insta-Trac / AutoTrac 4WD transfer cases.
Engine Oil Capacity & Specs:

2.8L I4 (LK5) & 2.9L I4 (LLV): 5.0 Quarts (4.7 Liters) – SAE 5W-30 (GM dexos1 Approved / API SN).

3.5L I5 (L52) & 3.7L I5 (LLR): 6.0 Quarts (5.7 Liters) – SAE 5W-30 (GM dexos1 Approved / API SN).

Preventative Maintenance Schedule:

Tire Rotation & Alignment Rules:

Standard Rearward Cross 4-Tire Rotation (4WD/RWD):

Front tires move straight back to the Rear.

Rear tires cross over to the opposite Front positions (Rear-Left to Front-Right, Rear-Right to Front-Left).

Directional or Off-Road Tires: Rotate strictly front-to-back on the same side if tires have directional tread arrows.

Drivetrain & Transfer Case Protection: Maintain equal tire tread depth across all four wheels. Tread depth variance across tires should not exceed 2/32" (1.6mm) to prevent binding or overheating in 4WD transfer cases.

TPMS Relearn Procedure (2007–2012 Models): Relearn tire pressure positions using the Driver Information Center (DIC) menu or an OBD2 TPMS service tool following any tire rotation.
