Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P2246 stands for "O2 Sensor Reference Voltage Circuit High (Bank 1, Sensor 1)". This code is triggered when the Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects that the reference voltage signal returned from the upstream oxygen sensor (or wideband air/fuel ratio sensor) on Bank 1 exceeds the expected threshold set by the manufacturer (typically exceeding 4.5V–5.0V depending on sensor architecture).
Bank 1 refers to the side of the engine containing cylinder #1. Sensor 1 indicates the upstream oxygen sensor positioned between the engine exhaust manifold and the catalytic converter.
Common Symptoms of DTC P2246
-
Illuminated Check Engine Light (CEL): The PCM immediately triggers the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL).
-
Rough Idling or Engine Hesitation: Incorrect reference voltage prevents the PCM from managing proper air-fuel ratios.
-
Increased Fuel Consumption: The PCM often defaults to a backup "rich" fuel map to protect the engine, leading to lower MPG.
-
Black Smoke from Exhaust / Fuel Smell: Unburned fuel exiting the exhaust tailpipe due to an rich condition.
-
Engine Misfires or Stalling: Poor engine performance during acceleration or under load.
Primary Root Causes of DTC P2246
-
Defective Upstream Oxygen / Air-Fuel Ratio Sensor (Bank 1 Sensor 1): Internal short circuit between the heater voltage element and the reference voltage wire inside the sensor body.
-
Damaged or Shorted Wiring Harness: Pinched, melted, or frayed wiring causing a direct short to 12V power within the sensor harness.
-
Corroded or Damaged Sensor Connector: Water intrusion, bent pins, or oil contamination inside the sensor harness plug.
-
Blown Fuse or Relay Failure: Faulty heater circuit fuse feeding unwanted voltage back into the reference circuit.
-
Faulty PCM / ECM: Internal module circuit failure (rare, but possible if high voltage shorted into the PCM logic board).
