Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P2618 stands for "Crankshaft Position Signal Output Circuit High". This code is triggered when the Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects that the voltage signal on the dedicated crankshaft position (CKP) signal output circuit exceeds the expected manufacturer threshold (typically indicating a short to battery voltage or an open high-voltage condition).
The CKP signal output circuit is responsible for sending calculated crankshaft speed and position timing pulses from the PCM/ignition module to external control systems, such as the tachometer in the instrument cluster, transmission control module (TCM), or secondary ignition/body control units.
Common Symptoms of DTC P2618
-
Illuminated Check Engine Light (CEL): The PCM immediately turns on the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL).
-
Inoperative or Erratic Tachometer: The RPM gauge on the instrument cluster may read zero, drop intermittently, or bounce erratically.
-
Engine Misfires or Hard Starting: Extended cranking times or rough idling if the PCM fails to sync ignition/fuel timing.
-
Engine Stalling: Unexpected stalling during idling or while decelerating.
-
Transmission Shift Issues: Delayed, harsh, or improper automatic transmission gear shifts if the TCM relies on the output signal for engine speed synchronization.
Primary Root Causes of DTC P2618
-
Short to Power in Signal Output Harness: Damaged, pinched, or chafed wiring shorting the CKP signal output line directly to 12V positive battery voltage.
-
Defective Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP): Internal electrical failure or short circuit inside the crankshaft position sensor assembly.
-
Corroded or Damaged Harness Connectors: Moisture intrusion, bent pins, or loose terminal tension at the CKP sensor, PCM, or instrument cluster connectors.
-
Reluctor Ring / Harmonic Balancer Damage: Broken, bent, or misaligned teeth on the crankshaft target wheel/reluctor ring.
-
Faulty PCM / Igniter Module: Damaged internal driver or logic circuit within the Engine Control Module sending high voltage onto the output line.
