Adjusting the front seat

WARNING
Risk of becoming trapped if the seats are adjusted by children

Children could become trapped if they adjust the seats, particularly when unattended.

  • When leaving the vehicle, always take the SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle.
  • Never leave children unattended in the vehicle.
    You can adjust the seats when the vehicle is switched off.&

When you adjust a seat, you or other vehicle occupants could become trapped, e.g. on the seat guide rail.

  • When adjusting a seat, make sure that no one has any part of their body within the sweep of the seat.

Observe the safety notes on “Air bags” and “Children in the vehicle”.
WARNING Risk of accident due to adjusting the vehicle settings while the vehicle is in motion

You could lose control of the vehicle in the following situations in particular:

  • If you adjust the driver’s seat, the head restraint, the steering wheel or the mirror while the vehicle is in motion
  • If you fasten your seat belt while the vehicle is in motion
  • Before starting the vehicle: in particular, adjust the driver’s seat, head restraint, steering wheel and mirror, and fasten your seat belt.

WARNING Risk of becoming trapped if the seat height is adjusted carelessly

If you adjust the seat height carelessly, you or other vehicle occupants could be trapped and thereby injured.
Children in particular could accidentally press the electrical seat adjustment buttons and become trapped.

  • While moving the seats, make sure that hands or other body parts do not get under the lever assembly of the seat adjustment system.

WARNING Risk of injury due to head restraints not being installed or being adjusted incorrectly

If head restraints have not been installed or have not been adjusted correctly, there is an increased risk of injury in the head and neck area, e.g. in the event of an accident or when braking.

  • Always drive with the head restraints installed.
  • Before driving off, make sure for every vehicle occupant that the center of the head restraint supports the back of the head at about eye level.

Do not rotate the head restraints of the front and rear seats. Otherwise, you will not be able to adjust the height and angle of the head restraints correctly.

Adjust the head restraint fore-and-aft position so that it is as close as possible to the back of your head.

WARNING Risk of injury or death due to an incorrect seat position

The seat belt does not offer the intended level of protection if you have not moved the seat backrest to an almost vertical position.
In particular, you could slip beneath the seat-belt and become injured.

  • Adjust the seat properly before beginning your journey.
  • Always ensure that the seat backrest is in an almost vertical position and that the shoulder belt is routed across the center of your shoulder.

WARNING Risk of potentially fatal injuries due to objects trapped under the front passenger seat

Objects trapped under the front passenger seat may interfere with the function of the automatic front passenger airbag shutoff or damage the system.

  • Do not stow any objects under the front passenger seat.
  • When the front passenger seat is occupied, ensure that no objects have become trapped beneath the front passenger seat.

Adjusting the front passenger seat electrically from the driver’s seat

WARNING Risk of injury or death due to the front seat being positioned too close to the cockpit

The front airbags can also injure the occupants in the front of the vehicle.

  • Always adjust the front seats so they are as far away as possible from the front airbags.
  • In addition, observe the notes on correct seat adjustment.

Requirements:

  • The power supply is switched on.

You can call up the following functions for the front passenger seat:

  • Seat adjustment
  • Seat heating
  • Seat ventilation
  • Memory function

To select the front passenger seat: press button 1.
When the indicator lamp lights up, the front passenger seat is selected.

Adjust the front passenger seat using the buttons on the driver’s side door operating unit.

To select the driver’s seat: press button 1 again.
When the indicator lamp goes out, the driver’s seat has been selected.

To select the front passenger seat: press button 1.
When the indicator lamp lights up, the front passenger seat is selected.

Adjust the front passenger seat using the buttons on the door operating unit in the rear passenger compartment.

Mercedes-Maybach vehicles: if the front passenger seat is in the foremost position, you can set the seat backrest at a very steep angle. This will provide a better forward view from the rear passenger compartment. Despite the steep angle of the seat backrest, a person may occupy the front passenger seat.

Adjusting the 4-way lumbar support

    • Use buttons 1 to 4 to adjust the contour of the backrest.

Adjusting the rear seat electrically

NOTE Damage to the rear seat armrest when folding the center seat backrest forward.

If the rear seat armrest is folded down, it can be damaged when the centre seat backrest is folded forward.

Fold the rear seat armrest upwards before folding the center seat backrest forward.

The middle seat backrest is adjusted together with the left seat.

Adjusting the reclining rear seat electrically
The reclining rear seats are on the driver’s and front passenger sides.

      The leg rest will fold down if overloaded. If this is the case, fold up the leg rest and engage it.

Setting the fully reclined position

Requirements:
R The power supply is switched on.

To set the fully reclined position: press button 1.

  • The rear seat will move into the fully
    reclined position.
  • The rear seat head restraint will move.
  • The leg rest will rise.
  • The front passenger seat will move as far forward as possible.
  • The front passenger seat head restraint will be completely retracted.
  • The front passenger seat backrest will move as far forwards and as far down as it will go.

To restore the standard seat settings: press button 1.

Call up the settings with the memory function.

You can use the rear passenger compartment child safety lock to disable this function .

The leg rest will fold down if overloaded. If this is the case, fold up the leg rest and engage it.

Attaching and removing the additional cushion of the legrest
Use the additional cushion only when the vehicle is stationary. The additional cushion is in the vehi-cle.

  • To attach: place the additional cushion on the leg rest.
  • Pull the rubber straps laterally over the leg rest.
  • To remove: remove the rubber straps from the leg rest and stow the additional cushion safely in the vehicle.

Folding the rear seats on the second row of seats forwards and back electrically

WARNING Risk of injury due to seat backrests folded forwards

If the seat backrest of the rear seat is folded forward, persons in the third row of seats may hit parts of the seat mechanism, especially in the event of an accident, braking maneuver or an abrupt change of direction.

  • If there is a person in the third row of seats, the rear seat in front of them must be folded back to the driving position before the journey begins.
  • Persons in the third row of seats should not rest their legs on a seat backrest that has been folded forward.

Always ensure that all vehicle occupants have their seat belts fastened correctly and are sitting properly. Particular attention must be paid to children.

If you no longer require the seat backrest to be folded down for loading or for getting in and out, fold it back into place.

WARNING Risk of becoming trapped if the seat is not engaged

The seat does not engage when folded forwards. The seat can fold backwards unexpectedly, e.g. when accelerating, braking or in the event of an abrupt change of direction or an accident.
People in the seat’s sweep can become trapped.

  • If a seat is folded forward, always fold it back before driving off.
  • Make sure that the seat is engaged.

If a seat on the second row of seats is not engaged, this will be shown on the multifunction display on the instrument cluster.

Requirements:

  • The area into which the rear seat is folded is clear.
  • The rear seat has been folded up.
  • Vehicles with comfortable seating: the centre armrest is folded up.
  • Vehicles with an extended centre console: the stowage compartment in the centre console is closed.
  • Vehicles with a folding rear armrest: the rear armrest has been folded up.
  • Vehicles with centre seat backrests: the centre seat backrest has been folded up.

Folding the rear seat into the front position
You can fold the seats on the second row of seat forwards for the following situations:

  • For easier access to the cargo compartment
  • Vehicles with a third row of seats: forgetting in or out

Vehicles with a centre seat backrest: the centre rear seat folds forwards and backwards together with the left rear seat.

Depending on the vehicle equipment, you can fold the rear seats forward as follows:

  • Six-seater: on the right-hand side of the vehicle only
  • Seven-seater with centre seat backrest: both sides

To increase the size of the cargo compartment, you can move the seat backrests into the cargo compartment floor position.

Button on the armrest of the third row of seats (seven-seater)

  • When the rear door is open: briefly pull button 1 on the backrest shoulder of the rear seat. or
  • Briefly press button 2 on the armrest of the third row of seats.
  • When the rear door is closed: pull and hold button 1 on the backrest shoulder of the rear seat.
  • or
    Press and hold button 2 on the armrest of the third row of seats.
    The head restraint will move downwards. The seat backrest will move into the front position. The rear seat will move forwards until it unlocks. The rear seat will then tip forward.
    If a seat on the second row of seats is not engaged, this will be shown on the multifunction display on the instrument cluster.

You can prevent the rear seats from folding forward when the rear door is closed by activating the child safety lock for the side windows.

Folding back the rear seat

  • Press button 1 on the backrest shoulder of the rear seat or 2 on the armrest of the third row of seats and hold it down until the rear seat audibly engages.
    The rear seat will tip downwards and move back. The seat backrests and head restraints will then move into a suitable seat position automatically.
    If a seat on the second row of seats is not engaged, this will be shown on the multifunction display on the instrument cluster.
  • To interrupt the folding procedure before engagement, let go of button 1. To continue the folding procedure, press and hold button 1 again.

Folding the rear seats forward mechanically (emergency release)
You can also fold the rear seats forwards mechanically using release loops. The release loops are located on the outer sides and rear sides of the seats on the second row of seats.

  • Pull one of the release loops 1.
  • Fold the seat backrest forward.
  • Before commencing your journey, make sure that the seat backrest and the rear bench seat are engaged.

Head restraints

Adjusting the front seat head restraints manually

WARNING Risk of accident due to adjusting the vehicle settings while the vehicle is in motion.

You could lose control of the vehicle in the fol-lowing situations in particular:

  • if you adjust the driver’s seat, head restraints, steering wheel or the mirror while the vehicle is in motion.
  • if you fasten your seat belt while the vehicle is in motion.
    • Before starting the vehicle: adjust in particular the driver’s seat, head restraints, steering wheel and mirror, and fasten your seat belt.

  • To lower: press release knob 1 in the direction of the arrow and push the head restraint down.
  • To move forward: press release knob 2 and pull the head restraint forward.
  • To move backwards: press release knob 2 and push the head restraint backwards.

  • To move forward: press release knob 1 and pull the head restraint forward.
  • To move backwards: press release knob 1 and push the head restraint backwards.

  • To move forward: press release knob 1 and pull the head restraint forward.
  • To move backwards: press release knob 1 and push the head restraint backwards.
  • To adjust the side bolsters of the head restraint: pull or push the right or left side bolster 2.

The fore-and-aft position of the head restraint will be adjusted automatically when you adjust the seat backrest inclination using the button on the door operating unit.

Adjusting the head restraints of the rear seats manually
Depending on the vehicle equipment, you can mechanically adjust the head restraints on the third row of seats as well as the centre head restraint on the second row of seats.

Head restraint of the standard vehicle (example)

  • To raise: pull the head restraint up.
  • To lower (standard vehicle): press release knob 1 in the direction of the arrow and push the head restraint down.
  • To lower (Mercedes-Maybach vehicles): push the head restraint down.

Vehicles with a third row of seats
The head restraints on the third row of seats have a usage position and a non-usage position. The usage position is the extended, top position in which the head restraint engages; the non-usage position is the bottom, retracted position of the head restraint. If the seats on the third row of seats are being used, the head restraint must be in the top, engaged usage position.

  • If the third row of seats is occupied: move the head restraints to the very top and have them engage there.
  • If the third row of seats is not occupied: move the head restraints to the very bottom.

  • Release the middle rear seat backrest and fold it forward slightly.
  • Pull the head restraint upwards as far as it will go.
  • Push release knob 1 in the direction of the arrow and pull out the head restraint.

Installing 

  • Insert the head restraint such that the notches on the bar are on the left when viewed in the direction of travel.
  • Push the head restraint down until it engages. # Fold the middle rear seat backrest back until it engages.

Adjusting the luxury head restraints of the rear seats mechanically
Mercedes-Maybach vehicles: you can set only the side bolsters mechanically. You can adjust the angle of the head restraint electrically.

Head restraint of the standard vehicle (example)

  • To adjust the side bolsters of the head restraint: pull or push the right or left side bolster 1.
  • To adjust the angle of the head restraint: pull or push the head restraint in the direction of arrow 2.

Use the additional cushion only when the vehicle is stationary. The additional cushion is in the vehi-cle.

  • Position the head restraint as far forward as possible.
  • To attach the additional cushion: hold additional cushion 1 against the head restraint and push press studs 2 into the counterpieces.
    Push button 3 on the bottom of the head restraint is located in a recess.
  • To remove the additional cushion: release press studs and remove additional cushion 1.

Configuring the seat settings

  • In the corresponding menu, adjust the air cushions for the Lumbar or Side Bolsters.

Setting the seat heating balance

  • Select Heating Settings.
  • Select Seat Heating Balance.
  • Adjust the heat distribution for the desired seat.

Setting automatic seat adjustment

WARNING Risk of becoming trapped during adjustment of the driver’s seat after calling up a driver profile

Selecting a user profile may trigger an adjustment of the driver’s seat to the position saved under the user profile. You or other vehicle occupants could be injured in the process.

  • Make sure that when the position of the driver’s seat is being adjusted using the multimedia system, no people or body parts are in the seat’s range of movement.

If there is a risk of someone becoming trapped, immediately stop the adjustment process by:

  • Pressing the warning message on the central display.
    or
  • Pressing a position button on the memory function or a seat adjustment switch in the driver’s door.

The adjustment process is stopped.

Manually adjusting driver’s seat and steering wheel position to body size
The vehicle calculates a suitable driver’s seat and steering wheel position based on the driver’s body size and sets this directly.

  • To set the unit of measurement: select cm or ft/in.
  • Set the size using the scale.
  • Select Start Positioning.
    The driver’s seat and steering wheel position is adjusted to the body size that has been set.

You can also configure these settings via the Mercedes me user account for your user profile. By synchronizing the profiles in the vehi-cle and the Mercedes me connect profiles, you can carry over these settings for your vehicle. Further information about synchronising user profiles.

If the driver’s seat and steering wheel position calculated by the vehicle is not practical or comfortable, it can be manually adapted at any time via the control buttons.

The outside mirrors are not set via this func-tion. Instead, they have to be set manually via the operating switches.

Selecting a massage program for the front seats

  • Select a massage program.

The availability of this function is dependent on the vehicle’s equipment.

Resetting seat settings

  • Select Reset.
  • Select2024 Mercedes GLS Adjusting the reclining rear seat electrically 24 the desired seat. The settings for the selected seat are reset.

Switching the seat heating on/off

WARNING Risk of burns due to repeatedly switching on the seat heating.

Repeatedly switching on the seat heating can cause the seat cushion and seat backrest pad-ding to become very hot.

In particular, the health of persons with limited temperature sensitivity or a limited ability to react to high temperatures may be affected or they may even suffer burn-like injuries.

  • Do not repeatedly switch on the seat heating.

To protect against overheating, the seat heating may be temporarily deactivated after it has been switched on repeatedly.

NOTE Damage to the seats caused by objects or documents when the seat heating is switched on

When the seat heating is switched on, overheating may occur due to objects or documents placed on the seats, e.g. seat cushions or child seats. This could cause damage to the seat surface.

  • Make sure that no objects or documents are on the seats when the seat heating is switched on.

Seat heating in the third row of seats

  • Press button 1 repeatedly until the desired heating level is set. Depending on the heating level, up to three indicator lamps will light up. If all indicator lamps are off, the seat heating is switched off.

The seat heating will automatically switch down from the three heating levels after 8, 10 and 20 minutes until the seat heating is switched off.

Setting the panel heating

When the seat heating is switched on, the armrests, the centre panels of the doors and the centre console can be heated.

  • Tap on Additional Surface Heating.
    The Panel Heating will be linked to the seat heating.

Switching the seat ventilation on/off

  • The power supply is switched on.

  • Press button 1 repeatedly until the desired ventilation level is set.
    Depending on the ventilation level, up to three indicator lamps will light up. If all indicator lamps are off, the seat ventilation is switched off.

Seat belts

Releasing seat belts

  • Press the release button in the seat belt buckle and guide the seat belt back with the seat belt tongue.

NOTE Damage caused by trapping the seat belt

If an unused seat belt is not fully retracted, it may become trapped in the door or in the seat mechanism.

  • Always ensure that an unused seat belt is fully retracted.

Notes on wearing the seat belt correctly

Always fasten your seat belt correctly before starting a journey. A seat belt can provide the best level of protection only if it is worn correctly.

If the seat belt is not worn correctly, it cannot perform its intended protective function.
In addition, an incorrectly fastened seat belt can also cause injuries, for example, in the event of an accident or when braking or changing direction suddenly.
Always ensure that all vehicle occupants have their seat belts fastened correctly and are sitting properly.

Persons under 5 ft (1.50 m ) tall cannot wear the seat belt correctly without a suitable addi-tional restraint system.
Always secure persons under 5 ft (1.50 m) tall in a suitable restraint sys-tem.

Each vehicle occupant must observe the following notes in particular:

  • The seat belt must not be twisted:
  • R The shoulder belt strap must be routed forward from the seat belt outlet over the cen-ter of your shoulder.
  • R The shoulder belt strap should neither touch your neck nor be routed under your arm or behind your back.
  • The lap belt must be routed as low down across the hips as possible.
    In addition, push the lap belt down as far as possible across your hips and pull tight with the shoulder belt strap. Never route the lap belt across your abdomen. Pregnant women must also take particular care with this.
  • The shoulder belt strap and lap belt must fit snugly against the body after being tightened.
  • Avoid wearing bulky clothing, e.g. a winter coat.
  • Never route the seat belt across sharp, poin- ted, abrasive or fragile objects.
  • Only one person should use each seat belt at any one time.
  • Never secure objects with a seat belt if the seat belt is also being used by one of the vehi-cle’s occupants.
    Also ensure that no objects, e.g. a cushion, are ever placed between a person and the seat.

Fastening and adjusting seat belts

If the seat belt is pulled quickly or sharply, the seat belt retractor locks. The seat belt strap can-not be pulled out any further.

  • Always engage seat belt tongue 1 of the seat belt into seat belt buckle 2 of the corresponding seat.
  • To adjust the seat belt height: press button 3 on the seat belt outlet and slide the seat belt outlet to the desired position.
  • To engage the seat belt outlet: release button 3 and ensure that the seat belt outlet engages.

When the front passenger seat is unoccupied and the seat belt tongue of the seat belt is engaged in the seat belt buckle, components of the restraint system may deploy unnecessa-rily on the front passenger side, e.g. the Emer-gency Tensioning Device.
Only buckle the seat belts as intended.

Function of the rear seat belt status display

The rear seat belt status display in the driver’s dis-play is a reminder that all vehicle occupants must wear their seat belts correctly.
In addition, a warning tone may sound.
If a person unfastens a seat belt in the rear passenger compartment while the vehicle is motion, the rear seat belt status display appears again.

Display in the driver’s display
Every time the vehicle is switched on, the rear seat belt status display informs you for a certain amount of time which rear seat belt is not fas-tened.

Example: vehicle with five rear seats
You can determine the status of the rear seat belt by the color of the seat symbol in the driver’s dis-play as follows:

  • Gray: the rear seat belt is not fastened.
  • Green: the seat belt tongue of a rear seat belt is engaged in the seat belt buckle of the dis-played seat.
  • Red: the person in the rear seat has unfas- tened their seatbelt.
