WARNING
In freezing weather, do not use th e windshield washer until the wind-shield is sufficiently warmed by th e defroster.
Otherwise the washer fluid ca n freeze on the windshield, blockin g your view.

CAUTION

  • Do not operate the washer contin-uously for more than 10 seconds, or when the washer fluid tank i s empty. This may cause over-heating of the washer motor. Check the washer fluid level frequently, such as at fuel stops.
  • Do not operate the wipers whe n the windshield is dry. This ma y scratch the glass, damage th e blade rubbers and cause th e wiper motor to burn out. Befor e operating the wiper on a dry wind-shield always use the windshiel d washer.
  • In freezing weather, be sure tha t the blade rubbers are not froze n Attempting to operate the wipe r with the blade rubbers frozen t o the window glass could cause no t only the blade rubbers to b e damaged but also might caus e the wiper motor to fail. If the blad e rubbers are frozen to the windo w glass, be sure to operate th e defroster before turning on th e wiper.
  • If the wipers stop during opera-tion because of ice or some othe r obstruction on the window, thi s might cause the wiper motor t o fail even if the wiper switch i s turned off. If this occurs , promptly stop the vehicle in a safe location, turn the ignitio n switch to the OFF position an d clean the window glass to allo w proper wiper operation.
  • Use clean water if windshiel d washer fluid is unavailable. I n areas where water freezes i n winter, use SUBARU Windshiel d Washer Fluid or the equivalent . Refer to “Windshield Washe r Fluid”
Also, when driving the vehicl e when there are freezing tempera-tures, use non-freezing typ e wiper blades.
  • Do not clean the wiper blade s with gasoline or a solvent, suc h as paint thinner or benzine. Thi s will cause deterioration of th e wiper blades.

NOTE

  • The windshield wiper motor i s protected against overloads by a circuit breaker. If the motor operate s continuously under an unusuall y heavy load, the circuit breaker may tri p to stop the motor temporarily. If thi s happens, park your vehicle in a saf e location, turn off the wiper switch, an d wait for approximately 10 minutes. Th e circuit breaker will reset itself, and th e wipers will again operate normally.
  • Clean your blade rubbers an d window glass periodically with a washer solution to prevent streaking , and to remove accumulations of roa d salt or road film. Operate the wind-shield washer for at least 1 second s o that washer solution will be sprinkle d all over the windshield or rear window.
  • Grease, wax, insects, or other mate-rial on the windshield or the wipe r blade results in jerky wiper operatio n and streaking on the glass. If yo u cannot remove the streaks after oper-ating the windshield washer or if th e wiper operation is jerky, clean th e outer surface of the windshield using a sponge or soft cloth with a neutra l detergent or mild-abrasive cleaner. D o not, however, use detergent to clea n the blade rubbers. Use only a spong e or soft cloth (and no neutral detergen t or mild abrasive cleaner) when yo u clean the blade rubbers. If you wipe th e rubber of the blade strongly, the blac k coating component will peel off, whic h will cause the wiper to judder. Also , after wiping it off, check that the rubbe r has not come loose. After cleaning th e window glass and wiper blade rubbers , be sure to rinse them with clean water . Rinse the window until the water doe s not form beads on the glass. This indi-cates that the glass is clean.
  • If you cannot eliminate the streakin g even after following this procedure , replace the wiper blades (or blad e rubbers) with new ones. For replace-ment instructions, refer to “Replace-ment of Wiper Blades”.
  • If the wipers do not operate in th e following conditions, turn the wipe r switch to the position.
    • The wiper switch is in the position, however, it does not work.
