SRS Airbag

  • General SRS airbag system precautions
  • For maximum protection in the event of an accident, the driver and all passengers should always wear their seat belts when in the vehicle. SRS airbags are designed only to supplement the primary protection provided by seat belts. They do not dispense with the need to wear seat belts. In addition to wearing seat belts, they offer the best protection in the event of a serious accident. Failure to wear the seat belt increases the risk of serious injury or death in a crash, even when the vehicle is equipped with SRS airbags. For operating instructions and precautions regarding the seat belt system, see “seat belts”.
  • SRS side airbags and SRS curtain airbags are designed only to supplement the primary protection provided by the seat belt. They do not eliminate the need to wear seat belts. It is also important to wear a seat belt to prevent injuries that can occur when an occupant is not seated in the correct upright position.Toyota 86 2023 For owners FIG (4)
  • The SRS airbags inflate with considerable speed and force. Occupants who are seated incorrectly when the SRS airbag deploys could be seriously injured. Because the SRS airbag needs sufficient room to deploy, the driver should always sit upright and well back in the seat, as far away from the steering wheel as possible while maintaining full control of the vehicle, and the passenger forward should move their seat as far back as possible, stand up straight and well back in the seat.
  • Do not sit or lean near doors. The SRS side airbags are housed in both front seatbacks next to the door. They ensure their protection by deploying quickly in the event of a collision from the side. However, the inflating force of an SRS side airbag can injure a passenger whose body is too close to the SRS airbag.Toyota 86 2023 For owners FIG (5)

WARNING

  • Because your vehicle is equipped with SRS curtain airbags, do not sit or lean near the doors. Do not stick parts of your body through the window. The SRS curtain airbags on both sides of the cabin are housed in the side portion of the roof (between the front pillar and a point behind the rear quarter window). They protect by rapidly deploying in the event of a side impact, rollover or offset frontal collision. However, their deployment force can injure a passenger whose body is too close to the SRS airbag.Toyota 86 2023 For owners FIG (6)
  • Do not sit or lean unnecessarily near the SRS airbags. Because SRS airbags inflate at considerable speed and with a force designed to protect you in high-speed collisions, the force of an airbag inflating can injure an occupant whose body is too close to it. It is also important to wear your seat belt to prevent injuries that can occur when the SRS airbag comes into contact with an occupant who is not seated in the correct position. Even when positioned correctly, the occupant can sustain minor injuries, such as burns and bruises to the face or arms, due to the inflating power of the SRS airbags.
  • Keep arms away from doors or their interior trim. They could be injured if an SRS side airbag inflates.
  • Do not place objects over or near the SRS airbag cover or between you and the SRS airbag. If the SRS airbag deploys, these objects could interfere with its proper operation and could be propelled inside the vehicle and cause injury.
  • If an SRS airbag deploys
  • When the SRS airbag deploys, some smoke is released. This smoke can cause respiratory problems for people with a history of asthma or difficulty breathing.
  • If you or your passengers have difficulty breathing after the SRS airbag deploys, get or have them get some fresh air quickly.
  • An inflating SRS airbag releases hot gas. Occupants could be burned if they come into direct contact with the hot gas.

WARNING

  • General precautions regarding the SRS airbag system and accessories and objects of any kind
  • Do not place anything (including straps or cords) on the steering wheel padding, column cover, or dashboard.
  • They can get tangled in the steering wheel and prevent the SRS frontal airbag, etc. from working properly.Toyota 86 2023 For owners FIG (7)
  • If the SRS frontal airbag deploys, these objects can be thrown around inside the vehicle and cause injury.Toyota 86 2023 For owners FIG (8)
  • Do not place any objects under the driver’s side of the dashboard. If the SRS knee airbag inflates, these objects could interfere with its proper operation and could be propelled inside the vehicle and cause injury.
  • Do not attach accessories to the windshield and do not place an extra large mirror on the inside rearview mirror. If the SRS airbag deploys, these objects can become projectiles that could seriously injure vehicle occupants.Toyota 86 2023 For owners FIG (9)

  • Do not attach accessories to the door trim or near the SRS side airbags and do not place objects near the SRS side airbags. If the SRS side airbags inflate, they could be thrown dangerously toward vehicle occupants and cause injury.

WARNING

  • Do not attach a hands-free microphone or any other accessory to a front pillar, center pillar, rear pillar, windshield, side window, or any other interior surface that is near an airbag SRS curtain unfolding. A hands-free microphone or other accessory placed in such a location could be propelled through the passenger compartment with great force by the curtain airbag or could prevent the curtain airbag from deploying properly. Either way, the result can be a serious injury.
  • Do not place clothing or other objects on the front seatback and do not affix labels or stickers to the front seat surface on or near the SRS side airbag. They could prevent the SRS side airbag from deploying properly, reducing the protection offered to the front seat occupant.
  • Do not install a seat cover unless it is a genuine Toyota seat cover designed exclusively for use with the SRS airbag. Even when using a Toyota genuine seat cover, the SRS side airbag system may not operate normally if the seat cover is not installed correctly.Toyota 86 2023 For owners FIG (10)

WARNING

  • General precautions regarding the SRS airbag system and children
  • Seat children in the rear seat with proper restraints at all times. The SRS airbag inflates with considerable speed and force and can injure or even kill children, especially if they are unrestrained or improperly restrained.Toyota 86 2023 For owners FIG (11)
  • Because children are lighter and weaker than adults, they are at greater risk of injury from deployment. For this reason, we strongly recommend that ALL children (including those in child seats) sit in the REAR seat properly restrained at all times in a child safety seat or with a seat belt, as appropriate. which is appropriate for the age, height, and weight of the child. Secure ALL types of child seats (including forward-facing type child seats) in the REAR seats, in all circumstances. Accident statistics prove that children are better protected when properly restrained in the back rather than in the front. For instructions on the use and precautions for the child seat, see “Child safety seats”.Toyota 86 2023 For owners FIG (12)
  • NEVER INSTALL A CHILD SEAT IN THE FRONT SEAT. NEGLECTING THIS WILL PUT THE CHILD AT RISK OF SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH FROM POSITIONING THE CHILD’S HEAD TOO CLOSE TO THE SRS AIRBAG.Toyota 86 2023 For owners FIG (13)
  • Never allow a child to stand or kneel in the front passenger seat. The SRS airbag inflates with considerable force and can injure or kill the child.

WARNING

  • Never hold a child on your lap or in your arms. The SRS airbag inflates with considerable force and can injure or kill the child.
  • Never let a child do the following.
  • Kneel on any passenger seat facing the side windowToyota 86 2023 For owners FIG (14)
  • Wrap your arms around the front seat backrest
  • Put your head, arms, or other parts of your body out of the window In case of an accident, the inflating force of the SRS side airbag and/or SRS curtain airbag could seriously injure the child because their head, arms, or other parts of their body are too close to the SRS side airbag and/or or the SRS curtain airbagToyota 86 2023 For owners FIG (15)

  • Because your vehicle is also equipped with a front passenger SRS frontal airbag, children should be placed in the rear seat and should be properly restrained at all times.
  • Maintaining the SRS airbag system The SRS airbag system does not contain any user-serviceable parts. Do not use electrical test equipment on a circuit related to the SRS airbag system. For required SRS airbag maintenance, see your nearest Toyota dealer. Tampering with or disconnecting system wiring could cause an SRS airbag to inflate accidentally or render the system inoperative, which could result in serious injury.

Precautions Regarding Vehicle Modifications

  • To prevent accidental activation of the system or rendering the system inoperative, which could result in serious injury, no modifications should be made to the components or wiring of the SRS airbag system. This includes the following changes.

WARNING

  • Installing custom steering wheels
  •  Attaching additional trim materials to the dashboard
  • Installing custom seats
  • Replacing seat fabric or leather
  • Installing additional fabric or leather in the front seat
  • Not attaching a hands-free microphone or any other accessory on a front pillar, center pillar, rear pillar, windshield, side window, assist handle, or any other interior surface that is near an airbag SRS curtain unfolding.
  • It is not recommended that additional electrical/electronic equipment, such as a two-way mobile radio, be installed on or near SRS airbag system components and/or wiring. This could affect the proper operation of the SRS airbag system.
  • Modifications to or inside the door panels for the replacement of a speaker or sound insulation
  • Impact sensors, which detect the pressure of an impact, are located in the doors. Do not modify any element of the doors or door trim, such as adding door speakers for example. Any modification to the doors creates a risk of airbag system malfunction or unintentional airbag deployment.
  • Do not perform any of the following operations. Such modifications may affect the proper operation of the SRS airbag system.
  • Attachment of equipment (grab bar, winches, snow plow, skid plate, etc.) other than Toyota Genuine Accessory Parts to the front axle.
  • Modification of the suspension system or the front structure.
  • Installation of a tire of different size and construction than the tires specified on the vehicle identification plate affixed to the driver’s center pillar or specified for individual vehicle models in this Owner’s Manual.
  • Attachment of any equipment (side steps or rocker guards, etc.) other than Toyota Genuine Accessory Parts to the side body. Always consult your Toyota dealer if you wish to install accessory parts on your vehicle.
