Introduction
Rear View Monitor, also known as a backup camera or reversing camera, is a device that is mounted on the rear of a vehicle to provide a view of the area behind it. The purpose of the device is to provide the driver with an unobstructed view of the area behind the vehicle when backing up, which helps to prevent accidents and improve safety.
The history of Rear View Monitors can be traced back to the 1950s when they were first used in military vehicles. However, it was not until the 1990s that Rear View Monitors began to be used in production vehicles.
In 1991, Toyota introduced the first production vehicle with a Rear View Monitor, the Toyota Soarer Limited. This system used a small, black-and-white CRT display mounted in the center console, along with a camera mounted in the rear bumper. The system was only available in Japan, but it paved the way for the development of more advanced systems in the years to come.
As technology improved, Rear View Monitors became more sophisticated and more widely available. In 2002, Infiniti introduced the first vehicle with a Rear View Monitor that used a color display. This system was available on the Infiniti Q45 luxury sedan and used a camera mounted in the rear decklid.
Since then, Rear View Monitors have become a standard feature on many vehicles, particularly larger SUVs, trucks, and vans. They have also become more advanced, with many systems using high-resolution displays and multiple camera angles to provide a comprehensive view of the area behind the vehicle.
In 2018, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the United States announced that it would require all new vehicles weighing less than 10,000 pounds to be equipped with Rear View Monitors by May 2018. This requirement was put in place to help reduce the number of accidents caused by backing up, particularly those involving children and other vulnerable pedestrians.
Today, Rear View Monitors are considered an essential safety feature on many vehicles. They provide drivers with a clear view of the area behind the vehicle, making it easier to back up and park safely. They are also increasingly being used in conjunction with other safety features, such as automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning, to provide a more comprehensive safety system for drivers and passengers alike.
