Before changing bulbs, check whether a bulb or an LED
light unit has failed. You can normally change bulbs yourself. If the exterior lighting is realised using LED technology (depending on model and vehicle equipment), it is not possible for you to change theL ED light units or individual LEDs yourself. If some LEDs fail, this may be an indication that more LEDs are on the point of failure. In this case, have the light units checked and renewed if necessary at a suitably qualified workshop. You should keep a box with spare light bulbs for the lights that ensure the vehicle is roadworthy in the vehicle at all times. Replacement bulbs are available from a suitably qualified workshop. In some countries it is a legal requirement to have these spare bulbs in the vehicle. It may be illegal to drive with defective lights of the exterior lighting.
Additional bulb specification
Some bulbs in headlights or in tail light clusters might have factory specifications that are different to standard bulbs. The designation is inscribed on the bulb, either on the glass part or on the base.
WARNING
If the vehicle’s lights are not switched on appropriately for the weather conditions, the road will not be adequately lit. The vehicle may not be seen, or not be seen adequately, by other road users. This can cause accidents and serious or fatal injuries.
- Check the vehicle’s lighting system and turn signals regularly.
- Repair the lighting system and turn signals when necessary.
WARNING
Changing the bulb incorrectly can cause accidents and serious injuries.
- Always read and observe the warnings before carrying out work in the engine compartment (→ In the engine compartment) .
- Never change bulbs unless you know exactly how to do it. If you are uncertain of what to do, have the work carried out by a suitably qualified workshop.
- Do not touch the glass part of the bulb with unprotected fingers. When the light is switched on, heat will cause fingerprints to evaporate on the bulb, which in turn will cause the reflector to dim.
WARNING
When changing bulbs, sharp edges on the lamp housing, hot or exploding bulbs may lead to serious injuries.
- Change the bulb only once it has cooled down completely.
- Always protect your hands when changing bulbs.
NOTICE
Water penetrating into the headlight housing may cause damage to the electrical system.
- After changing a bulb, always mount the covers on the headlight housing.
- After mounting, always make sure that the covers are correctly fastened.
Information on changing bulbs
Always carry out the following actions for changing a bulb in the given order .
- Park the vehicle on a firm and level surface at a safe distance from the flow of traffic.
- Switch on the electronic parking brake.
- Switch off the lights
- Move the turn signal and main beam lever to its neutral position.
- In vehicles with an automatic gearbox: Move the selector lever to position P. In vehicles with a manual gearbox: select a gear.
- Switch off the ignition.
- Allow the orientation lighting to go out (→ Orientation light) .
- Leave the defective bulbs to cool down.
- Check to see if a fuse has blown.
- Follow the instructions to change the affected bulb.
Always use identical bulbs with the same designation. The designation is inscribed on the bulb, either on the glass part or on the base.
Do not touch the glass part of the bulb with unprotected fingers. The heat of the bulb would cause the fingerprint to evaporate and condense on the reflector. This will impair the brightness of the headlight. - After changing the bulb, check to ensure that the bulb is working properly. If the bulb is not working properly, the bulb may not have been inserted properly, may have failed again, or the connector may have been fitted incorrectly.
- Each time you change a bulb at the front of the vehicle, the headlamp settings should be checked by a suitably qualified workshop.

Ignoring any of the instructions listed for your personal safety can lead to accidents and severe injuries.

Changing the bulbs in the front headlights
Preparations

The headlight does not need to be removed when changing bulbs.
- The illustrations show the right-hand headlight. The left-hand headlight is a mirror image of the one shown.
- There are various types of headlight, so the position and design of covers, bulbs and bulb holders may vary from those shown in the illustrations.
- It is not possible to change the LEDs of a daytime running light with LED technology. Go to a suitably qualified workshop.

Changing main beam and daytime running light bulbs
- Pull off the rubber cover from the back of the headlight .
- Turn the bulb holder in the direction of the arrow as far as it will go and pull it out to the rear.
- Replace the defective bulb with a new bulb of the same type. If applicable, push the catch on the bulb holder and pull the bulb straight out of the bulb holder.
- Insert the bulb holder into the headlight and turn it in the opposite direction to the arrow as far as it will go .
- Fit the rubber cover on to the headlight .
- Close the bonnet.
Changing a bulb for dipped beam
- Pull off the rubber cover from the back of the headlight
- Pull the bulb holder out in the direction of the arrow.
- Replace the defective bulb with a new bulb of the same type. If applicable, push the catch on the bulb holder and pull the bulb straight out of the bulb holder.
- Insert the bulb holder into the headlight and press in the opposite direction to the arrow.
- Fit the rubber cover on to the headlight .
- Close the bonnet.
Changing a bulb for turn signal
- Turn the bulb holder in the direction of the arrow as far as it will go and pull it out to the rear.
- Replace the defective bulb with a new bulb of the same type. If applicable, push the catch on the bulb holder and pull the bulb straight out of the bulb holder.
- Insert the bulb holder into the headlight and turn it in the opposite direction to the arrow as far as it will go .
- Close the bonnet.
Changing bulbs in the front bumper
Preparations
The steps should be carried out in the given order only:
- Observe the information on changing bulbs and carry out the tasks.
- Turn the steering so that the wheel on the affected side of the vehicle is centred. If necessary, start the engine to do this.
- Stop the engine again and remove the vehicle key from the ignition lock.
- Take the screwdriver out of the vehicle toolkit.
The headlight in the front bumper does not need to be removed in order to change a bulb.
The illustrations show the right-hand headlight. The left-hand headlight is a mirror image of the one shown.

NOTICE
Water penetrating into connectors may cause damage to the electrical system.
- Ensure that the electrical connection is correctly seated on the headlight housing when plugging the connector into the bulb holder.
- Turn the cover in the wheel housing liner in the direction of the arrow and remove it.
- Release the connector → Fig. 1 1 and pull it off.
- Turn the bulb holder → Fig. 1 2 in the direction of the arrow as far as it will go and pull it out to the rear along with the bulb.
- Replace the defective bulb with a new bulb of the same type. The bulb and bulb holder are a single unit.
- Insert the bulb holder into the headlight and turn it in the opposite direction to the arrow as far as it will go.
- Plug the connector into the bulb holder . The connector must click into place.
- Insert the cover into the wheel housing liner and turn it in the opposite direction to the arrow.
Changing the bulbs in the tail light cluster
- The illustrations show the left-hand tail light cluster. The right-hand tail cluster is a mirror image of the one shown.
- There are various types of tail light cluster, so the position and design of covers, bulbs and bulb holders may vary from those shown in the illustrations.
- In tail light clusters with LED , some light elements may be fitted with “normal” bulbs. These bulbs can be changed.
Preparations
The steps should be carried out in the given order only:
- Observe the information on changing bulbs and carry out the tasks.
- Open the boot lid or wing doors.
- Remove the vehicle toolkit from the stowage area.
Removing the tail light cluster

1. Loosen three securing bolts with a screwdriver .If necessary, use a suitable interchangeable blade.
2. Use the tool to lever the tail light cluster out of the bracket from top to bottom.
3. Remove the tail light cluster and place it on a clean, flat surface.
Changing the bulb

- Pull off the connector in the direction of the arrow .
- Loosen three securing bolts with the screwdriver . If necessary, use a suitable interchangeable blade.
- Remove the bulb holder .
- Replace defective bulbs with a new bulb of the same type.
Fitting the tail light cluster
- Insert the bulb holder into the tail light cluster carefully .
- Secure the bulb holder on the tail light cluster using the three securing bolts.
- Check that the bulb holder is correctly installed and seated securely.
- Fit the connector on the bulb holder .
- Insert the tail light cluster into the opening in the vehicle body and carefully push it into the holder.
- Tighten the securing bolts fully .
- Check that the tail light cluster is correctly installed and seated securely.
- Close the boot lid or wing doors.
Changing the turn signal repeater bulb

The actions should only be carried out in the specified order:
- Observe and follow the instructions in the checklist (→ Exterior lighting).
- Push the turn signal repeater in direction of travel and swing it out at the rear → Fig. 1 .
- Lever the side turn signal out of the body.
- Turn the bulb holder in the direction of the arrow and pull the bulb rearwards out of the housing .
- Pull the bulb straight out of the bulb holder.
- Replace the defective bulb with a new bulb of the same type.
- Insert the bulb holder into the housing and turn it as far as it will go in the opposite direction to the arrow.
- Fit the spring clip of the turn signal repeater at front into the body, push it against the spring force in direction of travel, and engage it at the rear into the body.
